So, for the last couple days I have been staying with Chris and also with Charlie, who is another friend. The first night I stayed at Chris's apartment his cat meowed all night. ALL NIGHT. I was exhausted the next day and ready to turn Zi into a rug.
Friday evening I stayed with Charlie at his downtown apartment. We were supposed to meet at one of the stations downtown and I was running late. I tried to text him, but my phone would not send the texts. When I tried calling him I got a message basically saying my phone had been disconnected. This was frustrating because I had called my phone company a few days before telling them to end my service September 30th, however it was only the 27th. Charlie let me use his phone that night to call my company. After holding for 20 minutes while the representative figured out what had happened he told me he had no idea why it had been disconnected but hopefully tomorrow it would be reconnected. Thankfully it was.
Charlie and I went to Navy Pier on Saturday and then vegged on his couch watched Breaking Bad and Doctor Who. All in all, it was a nice day. What do you think of the view from his apartment?
I had an appointment at the apple store at 6:45 last night (Saturday) because my new MacBook Air was having issues. I arrived at the store at about 6:30, checked in and was told to sit and wait at the Genius Bar. So I waited. After a while of waiting I pulled out my kindle and began reading Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen. After about half an hour I tired of reading in German so I checked my email and read the news. Eventually my eyes hurt, so I closed my computer and just waited. I watched as people sat down, waited, were helped, and left. I even noticed when the staff switched shifts. After about an hour I had been there longer than anyone else in the store. I was frustrated to say the least.
Finally, at 8:00 I was noticed and helped. I was given a new computer and I was on my way. I was very hungry, so I set off looking for restaurants. At that point in the evening everywhere was either packed or closed. I ended up in front of the largest Whole Foods store I have ever seen in my life, and I went inside looking for food, which I definitely found and devoured.
So as a pick-me-up-gift to myself I bought two little key lime tarts and a piece of cheesecake with a strawberry on top. The piece that I was given was not anywhere near as pretty as the one in the front of the display case--pretty sure the strawberry was starting to mold. But I wasn't going to let that bring me down! I went outside and sat at one of the tables on the patio, which over-looked a river/canal surrounded by trees. It looked like it belonged in a rural setting if not for Willis Tower lighting up the sky. Kayakers with glow-in-the-dark paddles glided by and a strong breeze made the trees sway. I breathed deeply but quickly stopped because the water stunk.
As I walked away I passed two employees by the dumpster trying to figure out how to catch and kill a rat (quite possibly with their bare hands). I thought to myself "Things could be much worse; I could have their job."
I never did find my phone (it wasn't at Apple) and the key lime tarts made me nauseous, but I didn't let that ruin my night. In hindsight I probably should have looked harder for my phone, but I had a nice night. I have always had a tendency to become overly emotional and frustrated, so that night was a huge step toward mastering my emotions and staying relaxed in difficult situations.
Okay, the next one will be about Germany! I know this might not have been what you necessarily wanted, but some of the information was important (you'll see why later).
No matter what happens, make today a great day!
